Nicole and Karen have embarked on a journey years in the making—the realization of Tikishla Medical Massage (TMM).

The name Tikishla is significant to Nicole and Karen as it is the name of a peak in the Chugach range and is derived from the Dena’ina language. The allure of the mountains has always held a special place in Nicole and Karen's hearts.

Beyond linguistic and geographical connections, Tikishla is also tied to Karen's love for hockey. As an East Anchorage resident, she frequents the Scotty Gomez rink at Tikishla Park.

Cofounder

Nicole comes from a science background, graduating from the University of Oregon with an environmental science degree. After college she came home to Alaska and fell in love with the mountains and movement. She believes in the importance of moving the body and being outdoors.

At this time Nicole is on a sabbatical.

Karen has a background in education, moonlighting in massage therapy for 12 years. She first came to Thai massage by taking an introductory class at a local yoga studio. It was love at first touch! Karen then went on to study Thai massage, as it is known, within the framework of Thai medicine, with her teacher, Nephyr Jacobsen, and Nephyr’s teacher, Yogi Somonanda.

In 2023 Karen left teaching to focus on Thai massage.
